Very insightful giving added understanding
I highly recommend all of Denver's books for all LDS and all Christians!
This brief volume ( 200 pages) consists of 3 previously available essays from the most prolific LDS author of doctrinal material ( 15 books so far and more to come) in this generation. Not since Bruce R McConkie or Joseph Fielding Smith has anyone attempted to deal with the very essence of Mormon doctrine as Snuffer has. There are two 500 pound gorillas in the room however. The first is that unlike anyone writing or speaking in Mormon culture today he bears witness that he has seen the Savior on multiple occasions ,received the Second Comforter and continues to be taught by Christ and angels today. Not since Joseph Smith has there been anyone who credibly made such claims.The second gorilla is that for making such claims publicly and for dealing with
Mormon history and issues in an nontraditional way he was recently excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints . That should come as no surprise. The recent history of the corporation that owns the trademark " The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" is that anyone outside the hierarchy who continually teaches that one can have a personal relationship with Christ or deals with present church practices or history in a manner that conflicts with the traditional narrative may be disciplined. Mike Quinn, George Pace, Lavina Anderson .Max Skousen all are additional examples.Any reader of Snuffers material should also be aware that the purpose of all of his work is to testify that all of Gods children can receive the Savior as the Second Comforter in this life
The first essay deals with his interpretation of Abraham 319-28 and two talks given by Joseph Smith in April and June of 1844 just before his death.. His thesis is that among those beings that formed this world were those who were identified as the"Gods" .Second there were another group for whom mortality was to be a time of "proving" . Both come into mortality some to be "tested' ,some to aid those being tested . For both groups however the risks of mortality are real and you may fall or be exalted depending solely on your performance here . The second essay offers a new and persuasive view of the real mission of Elijah. This view turns the traditional narrative on its head and involves a recognition that much about what most Mormons believe about Elijah is wrong. Snuffer proves from the scriptures ,for instance, that he wasn't on the Mount of Transfiguration. The third essay deals with Brigham Young and his faulty attempt to turn Utah Territory into a theocratic kingdom with himself as king . Snuffer takes a surprising sympathetic view of Brigham's missteps and uses his shortcomings as a warning to those who are similarly inclined I personally highly recommend the little book and found Snuffers insights into seemingly anomalous doctrinal or historical issues very helpful .The essays can be downloaded free of charge from Snuffers website for those who don't prefer the convenience of a bound volume
